Mount Ziria begins right above Ano Trikala. There are hiking trails, dirt roads for 4x4s, horses in Rethi, archery, mountain biking and paintball. Ten kilometres higher up are the ski centre and the plateau; on the other side of the mountain, at Feneos, are Lake Doxa and its gorges.
Four ways
The mountains of Korinthia have drives by car or jeep that are well worth it, whether organised or off the road. The dirt roads of the plateau and the passes around Ziria begin a few kilometres above the villages and are passable from spring to autumn; in snow they need a 4x4 and experience. Choose a route to suit your vehicle and your mood.
The summit of Ziria can be reached both by trails you will discover on your own and by organised, waymarked ones. On the way you get to know the mountain up close: you cross the fir forest, meet natural springs and, with a little luck, foxes, semi-wild horses and cows grazing freely. The routes and their combinations are many, enough for several visits.
Next to Trikala, in Rethi Korinthias, the Free Riding Centre operates. From the saddle you see the trails and landscapes of the area differently. Little riding fans go for a pony ride, always guided by the centre’s staff.
The Free Riding Centre also has facilities and equipment for archery, if you want to try your aim. For training with a view there are mountain bike routes, while groups play paintball in specially designed facilities, with all the necessary safety measures.
Organised experiences
At the Ziria ski centre and around Lake Doxa at Feneos, organised activities keep the place alive in every season.
You rent and drive a buggy on the Ziria plateau, in the forests around Lake Doxa and as far as the Agios Loukas gorge — experiences from one hour to half a day, off the road, with equipment and an escort.
On the artificial lake, completed in the late 1990s, with the little chapel of Agios Fanourios, you get out on the water by canoe-kayak, SUP or hydrobike, or ride round it by mountain bike — from spring to autumn.
With the first snow, the Ziria ski centre becomes a track for snow buggies and snowmobiles, ten kilometres above Ano Trikala.
In the same area, one of the most demanding and renowned gorges: a route of about 2 km with a 350 m difference in elevation, for those who want a challenge in the mountains of Korinthia.
