In the villages

The three villages sit at elevations of 900, 1,050 and 1,100 metres, and the ski centre higher still, on the Ziria plateau. The weather changes noticeably with elevation.

The two readings above are from the same mountain, 450 metres apart. The difference shows most clearly in winter, when it rains in the villages and snows higher up. The road to the plateau is cleared by snowploughs, but on snowy days chains are essential. In summer, at 900 to 1,100 metres, the day is noticeably cooler than on the coast, and the evening calls for a light jacket even in August.
The forecast for the coming days is in the two cards above. The ski centre usually operates in January and February, for as long as the snow lasts. Before you head up, call its management on 6944 617255.
